2007-06-22 A Window To The Soul
It has often been said that a person's eyes are windows to their soul. Anger, fear, happiness, grief, lust, excitement, it's all in there. But what if the eyes are for some reasons not available? Well, I found out that there's another window to the soul. Literally. I'm talking about the Windows Desktop.
With just one look at people's screen you can find out if they're tidy or sloppy, friends of organization or rather chaotic, smart or dull. It is visible to those who can see it. Over the past few days I had the opportunity to look at the Desktop of some co-workers (I am using that word in the widest possible sense here). Most of the time I didn't like what I see. I know I am a minimalist when it comes to that. In my configuration there is the Recycle Bin because I cannot get rid of that damn thing, and a wallpaper. That's it. A few more icons wouldn't hurt and I know it. But come on guys, there is only so much space on a screen. It does not make sense to use every available pixel to put an icon on it. Desktop links are meant to be shortcuts, you know. But when you need to search for your shortcut, it's... well... it's just not a shortcut anymore, alright? And what's with these default wallpapers? When you move into a new home, do you want to have the pictures of the previous owner hanging on the wall? Didn't think so.

Here's a photo of my car. It's got a bad sunburn on the hood. I have no idea what caused it, although my grandma is convinced that somebody must have poured acid over the finish. Makes me wonder what live has put her through to assume such a thing.

Disclaimer: About the things I said about the Windows Desktop... I wasn't talking about the "user" kind of people. They can do whatever they want, because they know not better. That's okay, because it's not important for them to know. Like I can't fix my own car, although a mechanic will probably laugh at me. No, I was talking about "professionals". People who get paid for working with computers. I think it's sad that they know so little about them. It would make their live easier.

What's your wallpaper?
It used to be these two for a long time, but right now it's this.
What's yours?
right now it's this. But I alternate between that and a wilco photo.
