2007-06-14 Ten Movies That Start In The Middle Or At The End

"Begin at the beginning," the King said gravely, "and go on till you come to the end: then stop."

Alice, not even a teenager when told this, didn't dare to ask why. Luckily, a lot of scriptwriters and directors are older and not that easily intimidated. That's why I can proudly present yet another crazy list of mine: Ten movies that start in the middle or at the end! I'm not expert enough to come up with all these titles all by myself, so Kristine helped me out. Thanks a lot and here we go!

1) Edward Scissorhands (1990)
2) Pulp Fiction (1994)
3) The English Patient (1996)
4) Gattaca (1997)
5) The Legend Of 1900 (1998)
6) American Beauty (1999)
7) Memento (2000)
8) The Emperor's New Groove (2000)
9) The Butterfly Effect (2004)
10) Star Wars (1977-2005)

At the beginning I was worried that I couldn't find ten movies, so I put Back To the Future (1985-1990) on the list. But that would be cheating, wouldn't it? Here are some more candidates, along with the reason why they didn't make it on the final list:

- Reservoir Dogs (1992): I only saw it once, and that was like ten years ago. But since it was written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, it is more than likely that the timeline is quite twisted indeed.
- The Usual Suspects (1995): Same reason, I just don't remember exactly how it started. Is it all a big cutback in which Varbal is questioned by the police? Maybe, but I'm not sure.
- Irréversible (2002): This was suggested by one of Kristine's co-workers. According to the IMDB, the plot "unfolds in reverse-chronological order", which is exactly what I was looking for. Too bad I never saw it. Then again... did you know there is a keyword called Long Graphic Rape Scene in the IMDB? Things like that don't really make me want to see the movie.
- Mulholland Dr. (2001) and Citizen Kane (1941): I've never seen them, but it's quite likely that they do not follow the usual timeline conventions.
- The Truman Show (1998): Oh c'mon! As much as I'd like to see this movie on the list, these are only flashbacks, really!

***

While browsing the IMDB, I found out that Sarah Michelle Gellar is 30 years old. I was like What? She's that old already?. That's when I realized that she was born in 1977, which was a little over two years before my own birth. So I'm going to be 30 quite soon. Well, she's totally in shape for her age, isn't she?

EDITED (2007-06-24):
Forrest Gump! How could I forget that one?

'Carlito's Way' doesn't make it on the list???

Cool list by the way....but for the inclusion of Butterfly Effect.

And you're damn right, don't watch Irreversible, long graphic rape scenes don't do anyone any good. plus its not a good movie.
