2008-01-24 Stranded On An Island

(written 2008-01-27)

"If you were about to become stranded on an abandoned island, and you could only take ten movies with you, which ones would you take?"
It's a stupid question, really. Why on earth would you take movies, instead of food, sunscreen, another person and a helicopter? And why would I be stranded on this island in the first place? And how abandoned can the island be, if it has electricity? (After all, how else would you be able to watch your chosen movies?)
I suppose it's more about a list of your ten favorite movies than about abandoned islands. Here's my selection.

Batman (1966)
Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze (1975)
Star Wars (1977-2005)
Ghostbusters (1984+1989)
Sneakers (1992)
The Lion King (1994)
Good Will Hunting (1997)
The Truman Show (1998)
American Beauty (1999)
The Matrix (1999)

Obviously, I'm into parallel realities. Also, I'm well aware that some of the movies (Batman, for example) are not exactly brilliant. The reason I chose them is because of what they remind me of. Do you remember when you saw Star Wars for the first time? Did it make you feel like seeing a whole new world, too? How about The Lion King? Don't you think the opening scene, where they all come together to see Mufasa's son, is one of the most touching things ever?

So, if you are reading this, feel free to post your own list as a comment. Stop vegging out... write something!

Groundhog Day! I would trade that for Good Will Hunting, now that I think of it. Oh well, too late. I'm on the island already ;-)
But I've never heard of Sprited Away, 42nd Street, Parent Trip and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Which of them would you recommend the most?

Ten movies? That's really hard. That's like deciding which of your friends should be rescued from a burning house -- and which ones left behind. But here we go:

Tonari No Totoro
Delicatessen
Brazil
Touch of Evil
Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
The Man Who Wasn't There
Rushmore
Silent Running
The Incredibles
Vertigo

I would have chosen Spirited Away and Amelie instead of Tonari No Tororo and Delicatessen, but they were already spoken for. And oh, the friends I had to leave behind to burn...
