2008-01-30 Five A Day!

This was the first really boring day in New Zealand. I couldn't even go online for ten hours straight, because we had this course. The course itself was quite good, but I already knew everything. Two of the many good things were that the instructor knew how to use the video projector AND he knew what he was talking about. Usually, these two are mutually exclusive. Quite often in favor of the projector.
In case you're really interested, here's the course material. But let's be honest: if you are interested in things like that, you will probably know a lot more about it than I do (hi Lynda!). And if you're not... well... why bother ;-)

***

Speaking of software: Yesterday I ordered an Ubuntu CD online. I could have downloaded it like everybody else, but there are a number of reasons why I didn't:
- everybody else does
- home delivery is posh
- I don't have a blank CD (hey, I just moved here!)
- I need the time to backup/clean my files.
In a few weeks from now, I'm going to throw out Windows and start using Ubuntu.

***

Second trip to the library! I traded the Terry Pratchett comic book for a book on digital electronics ("soldering stuff"), another one on photography and a third one that I've read before: The Time Traveler's Wife.
The picture on the right shows the comic version my favorite scene in Guards! Guards!. Not quite like I imagined it, but not bad, either.

***

Sooner or later I'm going to need one of these, because my neighbors are annoying me. I'd rather have it sooner, but it's not entirely up to me.

About the title: Today I ate
- two tomatoes
- a banana
- a mango
- a carrot
- three plums and
- a salad.
It must have been the first time in my whole life that I had five different healthy things in a single day. I missed the push-ups, though. And no swimming or jogging, either...

You decided to drop windows and go for linux? Just all of a sudden? Is there any earth radiation involved in this or maybe you forgot to put on the appropriate amount of sun blocker (living in NZ and all..).

Seriously: what happened?

101 170 145 154! Welcome to Working Title, the reading experience of a lifetime!

The reasons why I decided to give Linux a try are basically the same as why I came to New Zealand:
- it's there
- it's a start from scratch
- it's as far away as it gets
- I can learn new languages
- because.
It also helps to know people I can ask for help and advice ;-)

And in case you ever forget who to ask for help I might feel like jumping in with my little knowledge on this...

And not to tell you who's Nickname is 41 78 65 6c -> Let's make it a race. Are you quicker in finding out than the person that was given that name yesterday?

By the way: I almost convinced my wife with Ubuntu when I installed wine and added a link to Spider Solitaire on her Desktop ;-)

And last but not least: Of all your reasons I like the last one the best. THAT's Marc as known best to the world *grin*

Lynda:
Funny? Me? Really? *blush*

Hoshi:
Thanks for the offer!
Figuring out who 1000001 1111000 1100101 1101100 could be wasn't that difficult.
Spider Solitaire? One of my co-workers is really into it, but I haven't even figured out the rules yet ;-)

I am seriously considering ditching Vista and giving Ubuntu a go. I have installed it on one of our old machines at work, and it runs really well.
This may mean abandoning the study towards MCSE as well...

I don't know who you are (or do I?), but you should definitely give it a go! Never mind MCSE. Who wants the infamous M in their title, anyway? ;-)
