2008-01-23 Six Degrees Of Separation

When Kiwis gos to Europe, they sometimes get asked if they know this and that other Kiwi (at least that's what I've been told). After all, there are only five millions of them. The thing is, it's quite likely that they actually do. And if not, they'll at least know someone who knows that person. The theory behind this is called Six degrees of separation and is located somewhere in the middle between serious mathematics and cocktail party science.
Anyway, I've been here for less than three weeks, plus three more weeks last October. And it has already happened to me. I know someone who knows someone that I also know. Remember my interview with Intranel? I wrote that they hired a German guy a while ago. During the interview he told me that he was learning to fly a glider.
On Monday I got a new co-worker called Jiri (at last Jiri is how it's spelled; spoken it sounds more like Yirka). He told me that his flatmate is from Germany and knows how to fly a glider. Guess who that is!
Here in New Zealand, I know a little more than a dozen people by name... what are the chances?

Maybe you haven't noticed it, but I made a slight change on the right side of my blog. As of today, I'm trying to make money out of this blog. It isn't going to work, because nobody reads it. But the idea of getting paid for blogging was too seductive. Call me a capitalist, if you like. Or even better, call me a capitalist in a comment, and then come back and click on the ad ;-)
