2008-04-09 How to Make a Fool of Yourself...

... in three easy steps!

Step one:
This one takes a little bit of preparation. The day before, you have to tell everyone that you're planning to get up early, so you can ride your bike home in the afternoon before sunset. So much for preparation. Now all you have to do on the next morning is oversleep. It's that simple.

Step two:
Arrive at work, feeling quite good of yourself and what a great hacker you are. Then let your boss point out a couple of really embarrassing mistakes you made the other day. It also helps if the patch you created to upgrade the existing system isn't working again.

Step three:
Take dancing lessons.

Nah, it wasn't that bad. And it turned out I'm not the only hopeless case. In fact, some of the girls were even worse. But others must have lied when they said they never danced before. I must admit that I had a good time. Merengue is the perfect dance for beginners: it's so simple that even I can remember the steps. Reproducing them is a different problem altogether, though.
I haven't decided yet how much effort I'm going to put into mastering it. It all depends on how much dancing lessons will cost, if I have enough time (hey, Japanese classes are starting on the end at the month!) and of course if I feel like doing it when the time comes. You never know, I might end up being the new Patrick Swayze!
(Not that I'd want to, of course. Give me a break! That guy is getting chemotherapy and still refuses to give up smoking! How is that not insanely stupid?)

Yes, merengue is the ideal dance for a beginner. Just walk in time with the music. I think soon you can graduate to salsa, and then when you've mastered that, continue on to learning tango, which will capture and fascinate you and never let you go. At least that's what I'm finding out.

"Dammit Ben! I'm a hacker not a dancer!" :-D

Marc, I am impressed. With you, that is. You did it. Again!

It certainly helps to be a hacker first on the way to being a decent dancer. Reason: The bathroom breaks whenever your brain stops emitting code.

Let me introduce you to my favourite dancing blogger, Mr. Don Baarns, and the micro practising technique.

ben is right, btw. Way to go...

I have to let you all know Marc did extremely well in his first lesson and even danced with me after that the social evening. I hope he comes again next week...Come on Marc you know you want to!!!

Okay, I'll give it another try. But only so that I don't have to blog about computer stuff all the time.

Let me get one thing straight first: When Keryn says "did extremely well", what she really means is "did not kill anyone".

Sounds like there's no escape now, Marc! :-) I, too, would like to see some pictures. Who knows, maybe now when you come to visit Germany, we'll go go a Salsa club instead of Cafe Havana.
