Standard Nerds!
Standard Nerds!
A Play of Confusion
by Real Life
Uli as The Cook
Marc as The Emigrant
Thomas as The Boyfriend
Sascha as The Climber
Alex as The Hardware Expert
Ines as Herself
This is going to be a little complicated, so you better pay attention.
A while ago, I lent Uli one of my cookbooks. Now that I dissolve my household, I need it back so that I can scan it (taking lots of heavy book on an international flight is kind of silly) and give it to my parents afterwards. However, Uli lives nowhere near me and driving 150 kilometers to and fro just for one book is also kind of silly. Fortunately, her boyfriend Thomas lives a good deal closer and even hangs out in my little town every once in a while. Today, for example. But today, I was climbing with Sascha. Usually, we climb on Friday, but Alex is moving to Nürnberg on Thursday and I'm going to help him. I won't be home until Friday evening. So I wasn't home when Thomas tried to bring me the book. He left it with Alex instead. That's good, because Alex lives just a few meters away from me, and it's on the way to work, too. Tomorrow morning I will go to Alex, fetch the book and scan it at the office. A few weeks ago, I borrowed Alex's scanner and plugged into my office computer. By tomorrow evening, I will have all my cookbooks scanned and can return the scanner to Alex. That wasn't the difficult part. (I almost had you there, huh?)
When Alex heard that I scan cookbooks he asked for a copy. Sure, why not. The only problem is that I'm a little forgetful and might not remember my promise after I'm done with scanning. So I asked Alex to remind me when I'm done. Alex doesn't work at my office anymore, so he won't know when I'm done. He did the obvious thing to do: he told me to send him an email when I'm done. Simple. Then it came to me that if I forget to burn a CD, I might also forget to send an email. Enter Ines. She's sitting at the desk opposite to mine, so she will know when I'm done. And she has this funny little reminder tool on her computer. So after the conversation with Alex, I talked to her on jabber, and she agreed to remind me.
To make a long story short: Tomorrow at 1:30 PM, Ines's computer will tell her to remind me to mail Alex to remind me of burning a CD for him. Maybe that's why they call us nerds.
Remember back in the days, when civilization was in its infancy and Pluto was still a planet? You had to write things you don't want to forget on a yellow piece of paper and stick it to your computer screen. Thanks goodness these days are finally over. Hooray for high tech!
