Significant Other

Tonight I had some people over for dinner. We had spicy beef and rice, according to a Korean recipe, and fruit salad for dessert. Yummy! There are no pictures, though, because taking pictures means telling them about my blog. There's no way that's going to happen any time soon. Sorry...

It's time for a new word of the day: "significant other". Wikipedia calls it a gender-blind, politically correct term to refer to a person's partner in an intimate relationship without disclosing or presuming anything about his or her marital status or sexual orientation.. Leave it to the Americans to take a perfectly simple language and make it unnecessarily complicated. Funny enough, there are also Wikipedia articles explaining intimate relationship, boyfriend, girlfriend and life partner. Granted, from what I hear, all this social stuff seems to be pretty complicated for those who are interested in the topic. But is there really someone out there who doesn't know what a boyfriend or a girlfriend is?
By the way: in German, the word "Freundin" is used to refer to both a girlfriend and a mistress. I wonder what that says about Germans...
