Phone Call At Midnight
It finally happened! Half an hour before midnight, I got a phone call from Mr. Wolff, a headhunter from New Zealand. The first surprise for me was that he's a German who moved there 21 years ago. So we talked German, of course. That means that I still don't have a clue as to how the New Zealand accent might sound. Well, I'll find out soon enough, I suppose.
We talked for almost one hour. He told me that as a computer scientist I will have a very good chance on the job market. We also spoke about the weather and a lot of other stuff, some of it even job-related. About the rest there were two particularly interesting things I'd like to share. The first one is the fact that the coastline of New Zealand is longer than the coastline of the USA. After the phone call I took a good look at a map and I'm not so sure about it anymore. They must have counted all the wrinkles in all the bays. Plus there are quite a lot of little islands near the coast (even though at least one of them carries "Great" in it's name).
The second thing is the story of a rich man who lived in New Zealand. He was a fighter pilot when he was younger. When he retired he bought an old MiG-21 for himself to fly around. He even built his own runway. When the time came and everything was ready, the government wouldn't give him a flight permission. "Your fighter is faster than our own", they said. And that was it... his MiG-21 has never become airborne.
Anyway, I'm going to New Zealand for three weeks in October for job interviews. Cross you fingers for me.
