Experiment: Go to the Dolby website and check out the Super Speedway Demo in the Dolby Headphones section. Make sure you're using headphones, not speakers.
Do you hear a difference? Do you realize how crappy your normal stereo sound is, when you compare it to this 5.1 Dolby surround sound? I went there, I listened to it, and I didn't hear a difference. Not to save my life.
I have friends who play musical instruments and can tell the difference between a Fender and a [insert other guitar brand name here] with their eyes closed. I can't. Beats me. I even know someone with synesthesia, and must admit that I'm a little envious. My ears are colorblind and my taste buds are hardly good enough to tell if milk is adulterated. My nose is useless, too. But I'm not complaining. Eating doesn't mean that much to me, anyway, and with those ears of mine I don't have to spend lots of money on a hi-fi system.
At least my eyes are good. I may have glasses, but I can see rendering artefacts that most people aren't aware of. When Harry Potter's owl moves wrong or doesn't have a shadow, I will notice.
