2007-04-19 The Listening Experiment
Usually, I take my friends for granted. They will always be there for me and I will always be there for them. We will always like each other, no matter what we make of our lives. School, job(s), marriage(s), all that will of course not bother much -- and why should it, we're friends!
However, once in a while I like to recheck, and this is how I do it: When we meet in a group, I don't take part in any conversation, I just sit there and listen to what they say. If I had just met them, would I still like them, judging only from what I hear at that moment? It's nothing you want to do all too often (imagine how it would be if we did it all at the same time!), but every other year or so it's like taking stock.
It gives you a really good feeling if you like what you hear. And if not... luckily, it hasn't happened very often yet ;-)
