2009-05-26 Vector Graphics

Anyone remember Corel Draw? It was a remarkably expensive vector graphic program. Of course, nobody ever bought it, because everyone and their uncle knew someone who already had it (probably from someone else or their uncle). Not only was it rather expensive, it was also way too greedy for resources. It always seemed to me that it was developed for the next generation of computers. But as soon as the next generation came along, there would also be a new version of Corel Draw, slow as usual. Which was fair enough, because nobody really wanted to use it anyway. The nice thing about it was not the program itself, anyway. It was the clip art collection.
They were not your average bitmaps that you can download off the Internet (or could have, if there had been such a thing at the time). No, they were vector graphics. They scaled without jagged lines. Awesome!
And that's exactly what SVG files are nowadays. Icons that can be made as big as you want them to be. Check out Inkscape. It rocks!

A boring yet important topic presented in a very un-boring way. Highly recommended.

Geek time! I treated myself to one of these Drinking Birds. It's red, it's awesome, it's science and it rocks. Literally. I named him Captain Haddock, because of the drinking. Even Walter is impressed with it.

Word of the day: pasalubong. It's Filipino for Mitbringsel, which is German (and also cute when you think of it). A pasalubong/Mitbringsel is a small gift that you bring home from your travels.
Pasalubong. It has a nice ring to it, don't you think?
